I've been thinking a lot about how much backing tracks are used in the goth/industrial/alternative scene recently. It was after a conversation with Rob about bands he's witnessed recently, who aren't actually playing instruments at all. People -expect- to see some band playing the music, if only just to have a variety of people to stare at, and hey, it's nice to have emotional support up there.
I think that if a band (well... the people that stand around behind the guy that originally recorded the music, anyway) are just there for set-dressing, they should be more obvious about it and "play" giant foam vegetables instead.
