More Rantage

I've been thinking a lot about how much backing tracks are used in the goth/industrial/alternative scene recently. It was after a conversation with Rob about bands he's witnessed recently, who aren't actually playing instruments at all. And I just thought to myself, 'well, gawd, I'm a bit of a rubbish keyboard player, but I'm actually quite proud ( Read more... )

It -can- be a bit dull having just a guy singing on stage or whatever, so I can see why they'd want their tech-support guy hanging around, if only to reboot the laptop while the front-man distracts the crowd.
People -expect- to see some band playing the music, if only just to have a variety of people to stare at, and hey, it's nice to have emotional support up there.

I think that if a band (well... the people that stand around behind the guy that originally recorded the music, anyway) are just there for set-dressing, they should be more obvious about it and "play" giant foam vegetables instead.

Yeah, or at least make some sort of thing out of it... I remember there was this one guy who played in Edinburgh for a while, who basically got shot of the rest of his band, and had drums, bass and keyboards all running off a mini-disc, but of course that was fine cause everyone knew the circumstances.
It's when bands use backing tracks to make up for a profound lack of motivation that really gets my goat!
