In Charing Cross Station today, a man stood. He rattled a tin for charity, and his eyes pleaded with passers-by to donate. He even offered them a token, a symbol in return. Nothing much. But enough ( Read more... )

I completely agree.
I often get aggravated by charity collectors, particularly those collected for animal charities (as it annoys me how much more attention is paid to mistreatment of animals than children).
However, I never fail to wear a poppy.
I'm not saying this in boast, and I hope it doesn't come across that way: however, I have been at Rememberance Sunday services ever since I was old enough to understand (even vaguely)what they meant, and when I was old enough I particpated. it gave me so much pride to march with the veterans who risked so much for all of us, and to sing for and with them.
And that's without even the consideration of what my grandparents did, and even before cousins of mine entered the forces.

War is not a good thing, and not to be entered into frivolously, and current events perhaps fall into that category. But sometimes it is necessary, however distasteful, and I have nothing but the deepest of respect and gratitude for the amazing people who protected, and still protect us.

And it is with pride that I buy a poppy for each jacket and coat I wear out as I go out in them.
