are you guys vegetarian? Cause if not, I know a *splendid* variation on the peas and thyme and garlic one.

Look up Gordon Ramsay's "peas bonne femme" if you're interested.

I'm a carnivorous kitty - the Bunny is 99.99% vegetarian (with the exception of a little raw fish every now and then... also, he often wants to taste-but-not-eat things that make my eyes roll back in my head). I cook about 90% veggie at home - it's just easier. however, the peas were AMAZING! so I will definitely check out your suggestion.

Oh, wow! I wish I had something like that nearby.. that said, there are a couple outfits that offer weekly boxes of Stuff, which I should perhaps look into, and see how that compares against the kind of vegetable purchases I tend to make. Nothing too weird and wonderful: carrots, mangetout, snowpeas, broccoli, baby corn, and green beans, mostly. Frustratingly, so much of all this comes from a long distance away - much out of necessity, I suppose.. it wasn't so long ago that all vegetable availability was strictly seasonal. I just can't help feeling I shouldn't like baby corn so much, when it's getting flown over from Thailand, rather than grown in hothouses somewhere closer. (But would that be better? I understand a lot of commercial roses are grown in Africa, Kenya especially, and that the overall ecological impact of cultivating them in greenhouses would actually be worse ( ... )

We used to get our veggie box from Terra Firma Farms. It was excellent and about the right size. It really changed our eating habits for the better. (:

I love beets!

We have many farmer's markets here in the city. You can get everything from locally made cheese to honey and maple syrup to fresh veggies and baked treats. I haven't been frequenting them much since our move, but there's one held in the abandoned brickworks just a bike ride away... I'm looking forwards to checking it out in the near future!

I don't think it's a big deal if it's a little more expensive but makes you eat well and healthy. I mean, look at how excited you were about it!

the crazy thing is, it's actually *cheaper* - AND the farmer gets paid more money per item than if they had sold their food to a grocery. so the farmer gets more and I still pay less.

our market is small, but the cool thing about that is that it encourages me to try new things. the whole situation is made of win!
