Eh. Compared to the rank idiocy you find just randomly thumbing through LJ, this would hardly seem to be even a moderately sized blip. Anything in particular zeroed you in on this? Grudge match?

Oh, and to answer the question directly, there's a whole lot of llama drama surrounding it. I didn't really pay attention to the llama drama, but there are pages and pages of it. TBH, my replies to this particular post started out as moderate trolling and then I actually cited case law. I feel so unclean. :(

So anything you create has to have a registered copyright or it's fair game? This question doesn't pertain to that idiot, it's just that I'm confused about copyright law.

No, anything created already has a copyright, copyright is inherent and is a nod to your right as the creator of the content to control the distribution of the content. Registering your work gives you a registered copyright, but you hold the copyright on any work you create, whether or not you register it.

Based on their argument, they've just breached copyright by linking to the article without permission.

If I had to grant permission every time someone linked to one of my pictures, I'd start to get really annoyed after a while. I don't care if people link to them, as long as they're not claiming that they created them, or copying them and altering them (including cropping).

In my opinion, linking to something doesn't constitute copying it.

I don't expect people to ask me for permission to criticise me either. That would be stupid.

Ah... yet another example of how I underestimate the willful stupidity of someone.
