hate that book. anyone who can read through that time period of literature is made of sturdier stuff than i am. notoriously depressing and pessimistic.

try a day in the life of ivan denisovich, or the house on mango street, or memoirs of a geisha.

I read Love in the Time of Cholera last month. Depressing, but excellent writing and he had a lot of interesting things to say.

You know, it's funny. One of our dorm girls is reading a Steinbeck book and I was talking about how nonsensical descriptive I remember it being and she was just telling me that way back when, authors got paid by the word, which could explain the excessive wordiness you are talking about. Hmmm.
