Is the appearance of all these "new" musicals that are not originals (eg High Fidelity, The Wedding Singer, Legally Blonde, Shrek) a sign that the theatrical creative community is tapped and can create nothing new or is it that the easy and monetarily sure thing has taken over to the point where new can no longer exist? Is this just another example of the commodification of art? The creation of Blockbuster Theatre?
