There was this article on BoingBoing last week about enormous wasps nests in the south, apparently the winter was really mild last year so these nests never died out and just kept getting bigger, they found one the size of a VW that filled the entire inside of a delivery van and had dozens of satelite nests.
I'm definitely more scared of wasps than Cicadas, ever since I saw some wasps take apart a peice of fried chicken and fly away with it when I was 11.
I saw photos of that craziness. Made me shudder but was fascinated at the same time. I can't say that I've seen wasps take apart a piece of fried chicken, but I have witnessed someone hit a nest into a metal trash can with a broomstick then dump it out of his third floor loft window. The sight made me hide in the bathroom and put damp towels where the door met the floor. I am still surprised that we all managed to escape that event mostly unscathed. I watched the news the next day to see if anyone who was going to Lydia's that night was attacked by a swarm of very put out wasps.
Preying mantids are really neat! My roommate and I kept one as a pet for a few months one year, and I had the fun task of running around the city with a plastic tub trying to catch bugs to feed it. We kept it in a big aquarium and it would crawl out and perch on my hand and feast on crickets. The only thing that really unsettled me about it was that it would hang upside down from the lid and watch us all the time, but it wouldn't move it's body at all, just swivel it's head around as we moved about the room. Spooky.
I love fall too.. the weather here (Colorado) is a bit crazier right now, 'though. It was mid fifties until about 2:30pm and this evening it's in the high 60's. Low enough humidity, 'though.
