Kookie is a must have. Probably difficult to find- but well worth it. It's my favorite John Stanley comic. Thirteen Going on 18 is pretty great- you've got an entire run? Awesome! Kookie is the perfect comic- beautiful, beautiful art, great stories, great characters, great setting...I'd like to do a comic set the comic book world with a heavy flavor of Kookie.
Yeah, it took me 5 years to find them all, and I was checking Ebay nearly every day. It would be way harder to get them now, because so many more people know who John Stanley is now that Seth wrote that piece in the Comics Journal and then D+Q published those books.
You should check out Hopper's etchings. I think that they are better than his painting IMO. I saw a bunch of them in one of the art museums in New York a few years ago. His black & white stuff can be directly applied to comics.
Thanks for pointing that out- I'd never seen his etchings before. They're really beautiful. I'm surprised by how energetic his line work looks. When I think of Hopper I think of figures frozen in time. It's a beautiful technique- something I could never do. My line work is cold, cold, cold- and I LIKE it that way. Hopper is someone I don't go to for technique. I go to him for his sense of composition- and more importantly- for his sense of isolation and mystery.
