Running is very hard both on the back and on the knees (that's why I cannot do it). Fast walking will give you the same effects.

btw, you are right that it's easy to break sth (like our psyche at least, when we fail. So, in my humble opinion, it's good to take it very "slow," so it does not become another chore.
In my case, I walk 40-45 minutes for the Ladies. That's only 20 minutes or so one way. The rest is for fun -- no obligation, no pressure, so it is not a chore.
