Yeah, while I only know a bit about Chinese and/or Tibetan value systems, some things just stand out as wrong.
Especially since the whole reasoning why Tibet should be part of China. The Chinese say that since it was part of China at one time, it should be part of China again. But since Tibet at one point controlled a good chunk of what is today China...
*coughs* Or yeah, I agree with you: what the fuck.
I think the central misunderstanding is interference. They see the Tibet issue as a domestic matter, and anyone wishing to add their opinion as a colonial oppressor. Some of these people aren't even over the Opium Wars, as if everything was fine and dandy in China beforehand and Britain came in and ruined it forever
( ... )
The Dalai Lama has demanded the withdrawal of Chinese troops from Tibetan-populated areas and the relocation of other ethnic groups, which have been living there for hundreds of years. He also asks for rights to establish representatives in foreign countries.
If I were Chinese, I'd see this as a domestic and secessionist problem. If other countries got involved in the American Civil War, I wonder what would have happened! As an American, I admit I also see this as a domestic problem. China does similar things human-rights-wise to Xinjiang Autonomous Region. Which is highly problematic, but it makes me sad that it gets so little attention compared to Tibet.
I think that's another major misunderstanding people have about Tibet, that the Chinese have a lot to lose by giving up one autonomous region, however large or small, because there's a feeling that the rest will immediately demand the same independence.
Which they would. Then an interesting Tibet/Xinjiang/probably Nepal dynamic would have to play itself out. The Tibetans have never really gotten along with their Chinese Muslim neighbors.
