So tonight I went with
missy_manic to see Bill Bailey perform stand up in some pre-arena gigs at the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith. Never been there before but really liked the venue and
missy_manic quickly realised it was where they filmed TFI Friday's back in the day.
Bill Bailey was superb. I laughed a lot. Some great jokes about Bush/Blair and Gordon Brown. And singing the theme tune to Friends in completley the wrong context was hilarious! As ever, his musical analysis and jokes on the keyboards were my favourite ones :) I'd love to go see him perform again some time.
Anyway, before setting off tonight to go to the gig I remember thinking about what tshirt to wear. And I decided to go with my Hot Fuzz 'This shirt just got real' tshirt because of the Bill Bailey connection. Well this turned out to be one of the best decisions I've ever made. Why? Because...
At the end of the show the audience were slowly moving out of the studio to leave. And whilst the crowds of people were slowly making their way through the bar towards the front exits I suddenly turned to
missy_manic and had the following calm conversation:
Me: Isn't that Quentin Tarantino by the merchandise stall?
Missy: Oh my god, yeah it is!
and then we both had the same thought. Quentin was recently on Jonathon Ross and in the green room with him was Edgar Wright. I knew this thanks to
justtracy posts about meeting them both at the BBC. So we looked again in Quentin's direction and stood beside him, dressed in his trademark colour black it could only be...(not calm whatsoever)
Me and Missy: Edgar Wright!!
By the time our brains functioned again at this sudden realisation both of them were making their way down the corridor. So I took a leaf out of
swankyfunk's book of seizing the moment before it was gone (am thinking of your Pegg @ NBC studios moment), and at Missy's encouragement practically sprinted down the corridor dodging the crowds trying to leave, swerved past the 7 foot tall Quentin Tarintino and:
Me: (tapped Edgar on the shoulder: Edgar!
Edgar: (turns round)
Me: (couldn't actually say anything due to shock/sprinting down the corridor) but :D grinned like a maniac and pointed at my Hot Fuzz tshirt (to anyone else in the corridor who may not have known who Edgar was it probably looked like I'd tapped him on the shoulder and pointed at my tits LOL!)
Edgar: Oh yeah!! I saw your tshirt earlier actually.
Me: :D
Edgar: (smiles) Nice to meet you. (puts out his hand)
Me: :D (shook his hand)
And with that both Edgar and Quentin were gone through a private side door. I felt bad for
missy_manic for not getting the chance to say hello but she was in hysterics at my sprinting down the corridor and then practically ignoring Quentin Tarintino whom was probably far more recognisable to most than Edgar. It was all over so quickly but I was soo chuffed and shaking afterwards! Probably more due to the fact that I hadn't expected that opportunity to arise at all and I had only a few seconds to act - massive adrenaline heachace afterwards! So glad I wore the HF tshirt. I'd love to have known when Edgar spotted it. I suspect it might have been at the bar during the interval. Thank god I didn't spot Edgar then because knowing he was there would've been far too distracting to the gig. There was actually a joke Bill Bailey told about jugglers that made me think of 'crusty jugglers' in HF too! LOL!
But hey, a great gig, and what a fab surprise/moment afterwards. Am still :D
