Contact lenses - Request for info from Americans on my flist

Can you buy daily disposable contact lenses at pharmacies/ optometrists if you know your prescription, without actually seeing an optician/ doctor?  I'm trying to work out what I need to take out with me and what I can buy when I arrive (26 days until I leave!).

You have to show a current prescription signed by a doctor in order to purchase contacts here, not just know what your prescription is. And I don't think you can just walk in anywhere and find them, either. They don't carry them at drug stores. You might be able to find them at an optician, but I don't know how much stock they actually keep on hand. I usually order them online and have them shipped to my house, but they always have to call my doctor to confirm the prescription.

That's perfect - thanks for letting me know - I will bring enough with me to last through my stay.

I can never quite remember what you need prescriptions for in the States - there are so many things that you can just buy off the shelf that I'd need to go to the doctor for here!
