To livejournal user phdchrisPlease stop posting in my livejournal. I defriended you because I no longer wish you to continue to post here. I am sick of my friends having to enter a warzone every time they post on my livejournal, and I am sick of you commenting on things that are none of your concern whatsoever ( Read more... )

That makes me sad, though it might seem hypocritical to say so. Poor Chris...he really did need a place to vent. What would have been even better is if he had connected with some communities like economics to crystalize and firm his arguments. I am sure he will learn this on the long road to his PhD. Maybe he will renew his livejournal.

I had been watching his journal because found his observations interesting and I saw that you encouraged him to post on your site. You said that he would be treated with respect by your friends which you said would react with hostility ( ... )

Hi. I understand that you stand behind your beliefs. I was actually sorry and a little sad to see that you believe people like me think your beliefs are "evil." As long as you are not advocating murder, rape, and pillage, I have no problems with your beliefs--whatever they are--as long as you don't try to tell me that I'm bad because I don't share them. And that's what phdchris did. He was horribly rude and nasty in the process. And yes, I slapped him down for it. I don't put up with people being rude and nasty to my friends.

Plus... well, I'm sorry, but in a lot of cases facts (as in, say, the US Census!) didn't back up his assertions. He's in a PhD program. He has to get used to the idea that people are going to expect him to be able to prove what he says.

Anyway, that's my take on it. Maybe Sarah really does have a friend who would shout down a conservative speaker. I don't know. I wouldn't. (Are your observations recent, or from your time at Berkeley?)

I would venture that the hostility came out at his own egging and disrespect to my friends (which perhaps I should have mentioned as a condition of being treated yourself with respect). You can't see most of he said because he has deleted those posts for whatever reasons he saw fit.

Another thing that I should mention is that conservatives are ostracized on the Berkeley campus (though not in general: the mayor of Berkeley is a Republican, believe it or not). But it is not right and never is right to treat someone personally with disrespect because they disagree with you. This is one of the problems with Berkeley: there is too little political diversity. Yet one of the reasons that I love this campus is that people are passionate about the causes they believe in. I respect that, no matter what your cause.

By the way... ♥ the Sarah. You have handled this with so much class and civility.

Thanks. I only wish that things were not like this. I also wish that I could do as well in other areas in my life.
