Katou had four options. a) He could wait until both Mr. Fell and Crowley had left Club 33, break in, and steal some liquor. b) He could wait until Crowley left, and try to convince Mr. Fell he was someone else and get some liquor. c) He could do be, but with Crowley. d) He could do be but with both of them ( Read more... )

Aziraphale likewise had a few options when he opened the door to a person who looked like Cayce, but clearly was not (she lacked the distinctive mark which Crowley had given her, for one thing, but even without that giveaway it wouldn't have been difficult to pick up the difference in the visitor's energy signature.) He considered for a moment calling out the imposter at once, but that might limit his chance to discover who it really was and what they were up to ( ... )

"Very wise of you," Aziraphale deadpanned over his teacup, though a gleam of something not at all amused lit his eyes for a moment. "I daresay young master Katou will have learned the same lesson by this time. I do hope he finds the vinegar to his liking after he went to so much trouble to obtain it."

The demon managed to put two and two together.

"Clever, angel. I suppose you let him in just to see what he was up to?"

"And to determine exactly who had the temerity to show up at the door wearing Miss Cayce's face," Aziraphale said crisply between sips. "I must admit, it was quite a credible disguise. If not for the lack of your clever mark, and the wards of course, even I might have been taken in." He sighed. "You know I was almost having a good time until he bollocksed the whole thing up going through the wall like a clumsy great elephant. Sodding amateur. I do believe you've ruined me for any other adversary."

Crowley's eyebrows rose in surprise as much at the compliment as the information. "Katou disguised himself as Cayce? Well, Kira did tell me he'd become a shape-shifter. The metal arm is always a giveaway, though."

Sitting next to the angel, he wasn't sure what else to say. The mark of favour was an awkward topic, and agreeing with the adversary comment would be deeply true but not particularly cool...

"It's embarrassing, really," finished Crowley vaguely, referring to the pathetic nature of most of the creatures they were sharing space with.

"Hmm, I shall keep that in mind." He'd been paying more attention to nonphysical cues than the physical ones, in all honesty, but he was fairly sure Katou/Cayce had been wearing long sleeves in any case. Which, considering the weather, should have been a clue in itself, but oh well.

"It really is, at times," he was forced to agree. "But at least now I know for a fact the boy is not to be trusted. Though he could have proved the point with a good deal less property damage." He cast a disgruntled look at the mess. "Don't worry about that; I'll clean it up when I'm done with this cup, if the park hasn't fixed it by then."

The mantelpiece clock was inching its way toward a more or less correct time again, but he'd become a bit better at controlling his own stress, and reined in the energy leak before it got out of hand. This had been a fairly good day, before Katou's intrusion, and he was hoping to salvage what was left of it. "I trust your afternoon was less eventful?"

Crowley shot Aziraphale an oddly concerned look from the corner of his eye, but said nothing about it.

"Significantly less so," he murmured, trying to think of something that might cheer the angel up. "Though I did see John Adams reading the copy of Much Ado About Nothing that you lent him out loud to Susan in a cafe on Main Street. She was smiling, which is always disconcerting..."

"Oh, that's lovely." Aziraphale smiled himself, both at the image and at Crowley bringing it up. "It's heartening to think at least a few people have found happiness in this place." Susan and Adams were one of a few things that kept him from concluding they weren't all trapped in some twisted Purgatory; he prayed daily that nothing happened to either of them.

"Should we tell Cayce about this incident, do you think?" he asked after a moment. He doubted Katou's intentions had been truly malicious, and didn't want to worry the lady unnecessarily, but such mischief could all too easily escalate into worse. And it had been terribly disrespectful, besides.

"More power to them," he muttered. That whole relationship was still weird.

"Yeah, we're going to have to. She deserves to know. No doubt she'll find out eventually, when he tries to pull something else, and if she finds out that I knew and didn't tell her, she'll be pissed."

The angel nodded. "Well, I'll leave that to you, then. Perhaps I should mention it to Kira as well. He seems to have some influence over Katou, and I believe he's fond of Cayce."

"Sounds like a plan," agreed the demon, summoning some tea for himself. Sitting there in comfortable, companionable silence staring at the gaping ruin of the bar wall was oddly restful.

"Perhaps we should put in another window," Aziraphale mused, and finished his tea without further comment.

Crowley tilted his head slightly, apparently pondering the idea. "I think that wall connects with Ellie's bedroom," he said finally. "Sooooo, yes. I agree." The demon grinned.
