Valentine's Day had been good, really. Leon had spent quite a bit of time with D, and hadn't thought much about investigating.

And then he realized that the list of names that the park had sent him for his cards (which he had not sent out because they were embarrassing and Kaira hadn't felt like making them) was probably a complete list of ( Read more... )

A little ways down from where Leon was swimming, a swimsuit-clad Una had put out a blanket to sunbathe and read.

She hadn't really seen Leon since the whole police force debacle, and while she wasn't really avoiding him on account of it, she did feel a trifle awkward about the whole affair. Not to mention the fact that she had plenty of other things to think about after all that.

She'd heard the splash as Leon dove in, but being absorbed in her book, didn't give it much of a second thought.

"You know there's some ... fairly unusual people here," she said. "Gods and monsters, as it were. What did you plan to do if any such proved to be dangerous?"

Leon ran a hand through his hair. "Actually," Leon said, "we had some of those back home, sort of. The called themselves kami, some sort of freaky Chinese nature God thing, and I managed to deal with them myself. I mean, that's where I got most of my scars from, and I probably would've died if I didn't have one of them looking out for me..." He ran his hand through his hair.

"But here people are different, I guess. I was actually hoping to get some of the superheroes and... you know, good ones on the force to help us out if one of them was a danger, but obviously people didn't see it mine and Carrot's way."

"Fair enough. Let's say, though-entirely hypothetically-that someone whose powers were well beyond those of anyone in the park decided to cause mischief. Let's say they needed to be permanently contained-and since we can't kill anyone, that's clearly not an option. What then?"

Entirely hypothetical indeed. Leon had very good instincts, and that made him a very good detective. He could usually tell when people were hiding things. Besides, when people said 'entirely hypothetically', 90% of the time it meant that it wasn't hypothetical at all. Usually he'd demand that people didn't hide things from him, but he figured this was a special case, and if Una wanted to share, then she could ( ... )

She had to grin at that. "A dear friend once said to me that while we humans do a lot of terrible things and a lot of terribly stupid things, we're just as likely to all of a sudden turn around and do something brilliant. And possibly not even notice we've done it. I suppose you're right." She shrugged a little, still smiling. "I do like to have a plan in place, myself. Habit of a lifetime of military campaigns."

Leon shrugged. "Well, it's hard to come up with a plan when we're speaking about a hypothetical person who I know nothing about."

Leon, on the other hand, never was one for plans. At one point in his career, they had finally managed to catch some mobsters, and as he and his partner were outnumbered, his partner told him to stay put and not do anything stupid. Leon had other plans which involved trying to not let the mobsters get away, and getting shot several times, because he thought on his feet, with his gut, and not with his head.

"Touchè," she said, smiling. "Then all we can really do is take it as it comes, I daresay."

"Is there anything that we hypothetically should be waiting for?" he asked, rubbing the back of his head.

"Telekinesis? Mind control? Turning people into trees?" She shrugged. "All of those seem like plausible scenarios in this place."
