It just so happens that there is a perfectly serviceable broom resting against a little cottage in New Orleans Square...

Granny snatched the broom from the Rani, but made no motion to use the broom. "I don't put on shows."

"Afraid you'll be caught out?" the Rani snapped, her irritation getting the better of her.

"Oh, yes." Granny said, witheringly. "I'm absolutely terrified that you'll think I'm nothing but a mad old baggage."

Well, the Rani's thoughts were heading that way.

She snorted. "The opinions of others mean a lot to you, I see." Yes, the Rani was capable of sarcasm and even something almost like humour. "This 'magic' of yours. What else does it do?"

"Oh, this and that," Granny said.

The obtuseness was only to be expected. "Naturally," the Rani said. "Magic. Flying brooms. How quaint."

And clearly she wasn't about to get that broom.

"Far sight better than that 'science' mess. All fooling about with strings and butterflies."

It took the Rani about 1.5 seconds to understand what Granny meant about strings and butterflies (which was about 1 second longer than she would have liked); when the penny dropped, she couldn't help it. She laughed.

"I'm sure you think so," she said. "Societies do cling to their primitive beliefs."

"They do, at that," Granny said. "Don't make those beliefs any less right, though."

The Rani had to admit a grudging admiration for the old woman. She wouldn't be baited, clearly.

"That depends on how you define 'right'," she said. "But I'd rather not bandy words, as I've got work to do." She glared at the broom in Granny's hands. "If I cannot use that thing for the task I had in mind, I expect to see it for its ostensible use one of these days."

"Right's the other side of wrong."

She looked at the broom in her hands. "Don't use it much here. No point, really. It's not so big as to not be walkable. No point bein' lazy and using it to go down the street, is there."

-bloody old fraud and nuisance-

"Convenient, I suppose," the Rani said. Certain that she would get no further change out of the woman, she turned and stalked off without another word.

It wasn't that she was giving up. She was already trying to figure out how she'd steal the broom for analysis later.
