I managed to file my return ok over Christmas but the whole process is a total mystery to me.

I've always filed on paper before because I suspected I'd end up having this sort of fiasco, but this year I thought, OK, I should move with the times - I'll go on-line, and sure enough. I've been trying to activate my account since the 5th of January, and apart from the fact it took them 10 days, two phone calls and a webchat session to send my first activation code, each activation code they've sent me has been rejected and caused the system to de-enrol me.
So sod 'em. I'm back to paper next year.

You did leave it to their busiest time of year to set up an online account... but yeah, their systems suck. Doing it online (once you're set up) is mega easy though.

I thought that, but funnily enough, none of the problems I've had are the ones you would associate with it being busy. The web chat has always been available and the phhone is always answered within a minute or two, but their website is just totally without any kind of logic and a the moment is pissing me off royally!

It took me about three months and nearly £50 in phone bills ro set myself up for self assessment. At no point was it easy and this was only two years ago. There was no Web chat and to have a phone conversation meant phoning ar 8am, their least busy time, and still holding for half an hour. Very poor.

The online return is very easy, even though it took me two attemps to get it right yesterday. What I REALLY resent is getting charged half of next year's projected tax bill and being forced to pay it now.

They're shit aren't they.
Another attempt at actiavating the account today, another failure.
Hey ho - losing the will to live now!

Just make sure they don't charge you the hundred quid if it's late. This isn't your fault.

Want to do Harry Potter soon as post-tax return therapy? Xx

Oh yes, I'd love to. I know we talked about going inFebruary, what about towards the end February, beginning of March?
I'm keeping a log of every phone call, names, times etc so that I can appeal if I do end up filing late. I'm not going to go down without a fight and pay their stupid penalty through no fault of my own.
