So.. the army's going to poorly train the people in the Superdome for years to fight the insurgents while not really accomplishing anything else due to lack of support? How will we tell the degrading pictures of prisoners from the Mardi Gras pictures or drunk college kids, though?

Ohmygod. :( Really, the reaction to this whole thing is just so awful. Half the reactions, anyway. The other half is awesome.

Considering the behavior up to now of many of those people, I think that's the part of the Army's training ("dealing with insurgents") that is most applicable. On the other hand, what, armed men overreacting to a situation they're trying to control? You don't say.

We all know by now how far the Army is willing to go to fight insurgents, don't we?

That was not the Army, but a deranged group who very unfortunately happened to be in the Army. I would guess such people are as likely to be part of the civilian population here as they are to be in the military.

I love you, but that's total horseshit. Abu Ghraib was part of a larger pattern of institutionalized torture and abuse, either quietly tolerated or covertly encouraged at the highest levels of the DoD.

Not having the data to back me up, I won't argue with you on this, so I'll have to leave it at that. Maybe you're right and I just haven't read enough on the subject.
