you could have ribbon in your colors braided in and then add flowers into your hair...the ribbons then could hang down along with your hair...

If you already basically know how you want it, just do it like that, take a picture, and then think of ways to make it nicer. Maybe all it needs is fancy clips.

I don't know if you're a Friends fan, but Phoebe's got very straight, long hair, and she often had it pulled back and twisted so spiky ends stuck out at the back of her head. That may not be as formal as what you're going for, but it was different and definitely fun.

have you tried using beer as a setting lotion when curling your hair?
It's the only thing that I used to be able to use to keep curls in my hair.

Otherwise just grab two sections from each side, twist them together like a rope/candycane and join them together at the back with a clip.
