Hospitals were... such a mixed bag for Abe. He of course felt the joys of new life on some level above and beyond the rest of it, but hospitals themselves were always filled with people who were worried, sick, injured... and no matter how much joy there was to be found in a beginning, things ended here, too. He didn't feel it, but he knew it. The whole situation just resulted in the kind of headache he never, ever knew how to deal with. Too bad he couldn't keep his distance this time - he was here for a reason ( ... )

Explaining to two sets of aunts and uncles that their sons had been in an accident and were on their way to the hospital hadn't been the easiest experience, especially when he had an explanation he couldn't give. Not that "your nephew/son was Fated to go blind, it just managed to happen while he was driving, no big deal" would have gone over very well - he wasn't very happy with it himself. He had spent most of the drive to the hospital berating himself over not being there (and he should have been. If he had just gotten it all done yesterday, like he'd told himself he would, or turned down that extra shift...) and was down to worry over the two of them, "ok" didn't tell him much ( ... )

When Markham came into his line of vision, Abe immediately perked up. He smiled, his relief so evident that it felt powerful enough to overtake anyone around him, too. He returned the wave as the doctors turned to nod at Markham. The doctor simply nodded at Markham as he left.

Abe wanted to stand and rush over, but he knew he probably shouldn't. So instead, he just held out his arms. He knew Markham would get the message.

It wasn't both of them, but Markham doubted Abe would have looked so happy if there were much reason to worry over Zachary, so he let his brother's relief wash away some of his worry and hurried to meet Abe's gesture with a hug. A careful hug because he was almost positive the word "concussion" had shown up in his quick conversation with the woman at the front desk (room numbers and reassurance that neither of them were in any kind of intensive care were higher on his priorities than making sure he caught everything) and... well, car accident.

If Abe still had a voice, he would probably have begun rambling, and that rambling would probably have included plenty of false starts, stutterings and trippings over his own words. Ever since losing his voice though, he collected his thoughts differently, so none of that even mentally happened.

He clung for as long as Markham would let him, and even when he pulled away, he still vaguely clung to the fabric of Markham's shirt sleeve with one hand. It only left him with one hand for signing, but they thought along similar wavelengths anyway most of the time. It would be okay. He didn't even know how much Markham had been told, where he needed to begin explaining...

Father? he signed. Was he on the way yet? Caught in traffic? Stuck at work without his phone again and therefore without a clue...?
