Thoughts on homeschooling

Maybe someone has thought of this stuff, but Homeschooling is such a sudden sensation (I know it's been around a long time, but has, in recent years, become much more widespread, to, I think, unprecedented levels) that I'm imagining there are a lot of cracks to fall through. You raise a valid concern about no one looking out for homeschooled children. Yeah, as a group homeschooled children are better educated (at least in some ways -- since one of the key reasons for homeschooling is to avoid secular education the fact they can win spelling bees might not be as remarkable as it seems; maybe they can win spelling bees because that's the extent of their education, hehe), but, you're right, there is a social aspect beyond just who the kids will play with ( ... )

With the trend being so popular and public schools being so bad, and getting worse. And the standardized testing is a real turnoff for a lot of people - I figure that eventually there will be regulations for this. I mean, when I look at it, it seems so obviously to cry out for regulations, for all the reasons I've stated. What I think, though, is that it'll come to a point of crisis, or there will be some scandal where a lot of kids get badly hurt, before it's widely realized that regulation of some sort is needed. Which will be sad.
