Melancholia, anyone? I watched a bootleg and was sort of making fun of it with my friend, but it's been really haunting me these past few days. I dare say it was frightening.
Lars Von Trier is the only director that can induce my world-melting anxiety
lol yep.
i think hes fkn brilliant. & i honestly dont think his movies are misogynist @ all. (he might be but i dont know him personally so i couldnt say) i think he sees lots of things in the human condition & just puts that on film. i think breaking the waves is one of the best movie ever made.
Oh, I totally dug this movie. What did you find frightening about it?
I too continued to think about it for days afterward, but it mostly made me ruminate on the different reactions people have to the expectation of tragedy (as in the end of the world) and the expectation of bliss (as in a wedding).
mostly the idea that some sort of violent end was coming without all the stupid 'day after tomorrow' 2012 shit happening...it was just the WAITING. and that final scene.
p.s, is your username a reference to harlow's monkeys?
I hear you. We did have the inevitable what-if conversations after the movie ended - and I'd agree these are much more interesting in a scenario where we'd know ahead of time that all was coming to an end. But tbh I found it rather difficult to relate to Claire's reaction of fear and panic - I think I'd be much calmer about it, as Justine was, although for somewhat different reasons. It isn't that I think the world is totally evil (anymore, heh) but when something of *literally* cosmic proportions is about to befall all of humanity, well, what use is there in freaking out about it? What measures can you possibly take to save your loved ones or yourself? Is suicide really any better? Naked, with eyes wide open, bathed in the light of the planet that will soon kill you - that made a hell of a lot of sense to me.
Though I will say I found almost every character in this movie, including Justine, rather detestable. That doesn't typically stop me from enjoying a story, though.
