Kain had mentioned that he would join Terra eventually, so he arrived in the area, immediately looking for her. It had felt like too long since they'd trained together, and he looked forward to that opportunity now.

But he was surprised by the sight that greeted him. There was Terra, but instead of fighting mannequins, she appeared to be... holding something...? From a distance it was hard to tell what exactly. Kain approached warily, glancing around to be sure that they were alone for now.

"Terra...?"

Kain hadn't thought that possible, either... and hadn't actually realized it until now. But it was true. He had bonded with her in ways he couldn't with most people. No one else he was close to really knew what it was like to experience what he had. But Terra did.

"...You would?" Because although he'd been able to admit to it, he was surprised that she felt that way as well. Typical Kain, he didn't quite see himself as being worthwhile company. But maybe...

Kain's surprise brought out a small smile. She had come to expect that response, though disagreed with his self-assessment. Her companionship said otherwise, she thought, but evidently words were needed as well. "Yes, of course. You understand in ways that most people just can't, and even aside from that, you're a good companion. I...sometimes forget we're not technically on the same side."

"I know what you mean, about... understanding." Kain nodded slowly, letting himself accept that she wouldn't spend the time with him if she thought him unworthy to be around. "I feel the same way. If only I didn't have this weakness, this... darkness... Then I might have been chosen by Cosmos, and I would be there among the rest of you." Instead, he had to suffer the consequences of his traitorous actions. "But I doubt even then that I would be over there. This darkness was probably always part of me."

Terra stared at him thoughtfully, wishing she could immediately dispute that. But of course, she couldn't. For all she knew, Kain might be right about that. Still.... "Perhaps, but it doesn't have to define you. As long as you keep fighting it, that's what's important. I hope you keep doing that, no matter where you are or what company you have."

"I hope so... Even if it won't be the same, if we're set home. And I don't want to forget this place." Even despite the less pleasant things that had happened in his time here, it was worth it to Kain. He'd met Tooth and Terra here, and didn't want to forget them. "But... I'll keep fighting, as you say. At least when I'm fighting and loathing the darkness, I know I do so in my right mind."

That sentiment provokes a smile from Terra and she nods encouragingly. "Exactly. Then, it's your own choice."

She stares outward at the floating islands and tendrils of energy, thoughtful. "I still don't remember my life before this, though I was told enough that I probably should. But...whatever happens, I don't want to forget this place or the people I met here. Maybe there is a way for that to be possible."

Kain nodded. "I don't want to forget... anything, of my past at home or here. It all too important to who I am." Besides, not knowing why he had that Dark Self would be too confusing to bear, without an explanation as to why it existed.

he paused for a moment. "Who was your... friend who you had with you just now? I didn't know you were a summoner as well... Are you?"

"My...oh! That was my moogle." Thinking of him made Terra smile. "I guess I am a summoner, of sorts. At least, I can do so with summonstones. But the moogle is...special. When I found him earlier, he offered his help. He can mimic the attacks of any other summon." And he was nice to cuddle, but Terra already demonstrated that.

"That's an impressive Eidolon." Kain appreciates the power of those summoned creatures, having seen Rydia's in battle plenty of times. "...and... it's good that you have him here, in this place." It made Kain a little wistful, thinking of how close he had been with Tooth. They'd spent so much time together, especially when Toohless had been 'guarding' him.

"His company has helped a lot...." And then she catches that wistfulness, feeling a little bad for mentioning it when he must be missing Tooth. Truth be told, she missed him a little too...at least when she didn't have to fight him. "...you could do the same. Summon, I mean. Anyone with a summonstone can use them. I know it's not the same as having your dragon friend around...but there's dragon summons, too."

Kain looked completely surprised by the revelation. "I could summon? Truly? Where I'm from that power is limited to Summoners..." Kain knew better than to get his hopes up. Still, he'd learned those Augments, so why shouldn't he be able to gain this extra ability? "The stone can be used even by those with no magical inclination?"

"I think so, yes. Well...we could find out, if you want?" Terra took out a red, round summonstone, cradling it in the palm of her hand. "Do you still want to train?"

Kain nodded, looking thoughtful. He may as well see what that entailed, and if it didn't work, it was no real problem. "Yes... I would like to."

Terra smiled, then glanced around. "I see some mannequins over there, below. Let's go to them and you can call forth the being inside this stone." She gently handed it over to him, not saying which it was...but if the being within found him worthy, he would learn soon enough.

Kain took the stone in hand, looking it over curiously. He was afraid he might not have it in him to use it. He wasn't exactly magically inclined. What if he couldn't? If nothing happened, would Terra think less of him? "Right, let's see what happens."
