Exciting news (if you are a geek with no life)

Whoot!   I submitted a paper for publication today, it's called:  "How reliable are density estimates for diurnal primates?".

It is almost as interesting as lemur saliva... so check it out in an issue of International Journal of Primatology coming soon to a place near you (hopefully).

Well--- I must admit... not teribbly interesting. Basically, to know if a primate species is endangered they go out and do "line transects" (i.e. walk in a straight line for 4 km and count how many monkeys you see). There are a bunch of different ways to analyze the data (4 in total). Our paper looked at these 4 different ways and found the one that gives the most reliable estimates of primate density (in relation to real density numbers that my advisors have from studying a few groups for 10 or so years). Turns out that some analysis methods give REALLY wrong answers--- so if we keep using those, we will not really have a good idea of which primates are in trouble and which ones aren't, becuase they numbers are inflated artificially. So for once, my work might have practical benefits that can help monkeys get on the endangered species list easier so they are protected more---hopefully.
