[Ariel's been almost equally content with her life for the most part. Presently, she's just bouncing around. She spots Rapunzel and hops up to her.]

Ooh, what are you drawing?

[Suddenly, Ariel deflates a little.]

I-I wouldn't know. [Her voice drops a little.] We haven't exactly kissed yet. I mean, there are plenty of times we've come close but we, um, can't.

[She sighs.]

It's so complicated! B-but I'm sure they get better, definitely!

[Rapunzel's expression falls slightly too, eyebrows knitting in confusion. Why is there deflating?! D8]

You haven't...? You can't...? I don't understand... You do want to, right?

Of course I want to! I just -- [Her voice drops even more.] I am - um - was a mermaid. And I made a deal with a sea witch to get legs so Eric and I could be together. But if I kiss him I'll become human permanently. Which would be great! But my father and some of my sisters still live there and I just couldn't --

[She lets out a big breath.]

[Rapunzel blinks slowly at her, absorbing this information and carefully filing it away. She looks thoughtful for a moment, then sympathetic, and then she nods in understanding]

I... I think I understand that. I mean- I'm sure if my mother found out that Eugene became my boyfriend even though she really doesn't like him...

[Her lips quirk into a frown, but then she takes a deep breath and shakes it off.] But I'm an adult now and I can decide what to do for myself now. I've learned that from being here.

[Ariel smiles gratefully at her. She opens her mouth to say something, pauses, then continues.]

Why doesn't your mother like him?

[She lets out a heavy sigh]

Mother... thinks that he kidnapped me from home and brought me here. Which completely isn't true, 'cause I'm the one who asked him to guide me to the academy! But for some reason she just won't listen to me and thinks that he's a dangerous thief who wants to hurt me, but I just know she's wrong about that, too.

[Ariel frowns.]

Oh. I'm sorry. I just -- it's not fair. My father is like that sometimes, too. If they would just listen!

[She smiles halfheartedly at Rapunzel.]

[She blinks at Ariel in shock, eyes wide. She's never met someone in a similar parental situation before!]

E-Exactly! Are all parents stubborn like that?

[Ariel shrugs.]

I dunno! I don't think my mother was stubborn at all. Not from what I remember, at least.

[She pauses.]

Although they must be trying to protect us or...something.

I guess so... But still. I can take care of myself now. I wish she'd just trust me on this.
