A small part of her was beginning to wonder if maybe he was gone for good, but the Lieutenant had been adamant that wasn't the case, so she had ignored that idea as best she could.
Then, this morning, upon walking into his room for another quick check, Astrid had noticed something odd- things had definitely been moved around since she was in there yesterday. Things she hadn't touched.

[She half-limped over to the desk, her leg sore from the effort she'd put into getting here- and punched Hiccup in his good arm. Hard.]

[His left hand instinctively lifted up to rub the area where his arm had just been punched, but then immediately dropped limp again when he was reminded that--oh yeah, his left arm, while now attached to the rest of his body, still hurt. A lot.]

Or, rather, at Hiccup's back.
He'd heard through the grapevine that Hiccup was back and not, as he originally thought, dead. That was a good thing. But the distinct lack of Hiccup anywhere visible told Dave that Hiccup maybe didn't want anyone to find him-and even if Dave went out and found him anyway, what would he say? Yeah, he was mad. Yeah, he was upset, too, but he was certain Astrid had done enough yelling at Hiccup for everyone at the Academy.
Probably.
Dave tries to take some comfort in the fact that Hiccup's out and doing something, but he can tell by the way the boy isn't actually making anything that things still aren't okay. Why did he ever think they would be?
After about a minute or so, he clears his throat to catch Hiccup's attention.]
