What was that winter break like for Mike and/or Sulley?
The movie skips right from the end of the first semester to the beginning of the second semester. What happened in between? Did they go home for the holidays (do monsters have winter holidays)? How did the Sullivans react to the news that Jimmy had been kicked out of the scaring program--or did he just not tell them? And Mike--how do his folks react? Where does he turn for support--he and Sulley don't have each other's friendship to fall back on yet, and I think Randy, as a budding top scarer, would have more on his mind by this time than reassuring his loser roommate... How do Mike and Sulley stand the idleness of winter break after the enthusiasm of the first semester? How awful is it to fill out the registration form for scream can engineering?
Basically, I want angst fic about coming home in disgrace after having left in triumph.

A/N: Okay, somehow this happened, and it got really headcanony in places about Bill Sullivan (Sulley's father, mentioned when he first walks into the lecture).

Waiting for his horns to grow in, for his milk teeth to be replaced by his adult ones, for him to get tall enough to be able to build the muscle and bulk out properly. I love the contrast between the easy superiority Sulley adopts with everyone at school and the helplessness he feels with his father. And I love how even now, even though Sulley really hasn't been concentrating on school, he's starting to break from his father's harsh ideals and form his own philosophy about scaring as a job, as a skill that can be learned. He's beginning to turn himself into the Sulley we see in MI: someone who's extremely competent at scaring, while being completely un-scary in everyday life. ("Save it for the scare floor, Randall." ... "But I'm not gonna scare you. I'm off-duty.")
This is such an interesting and heartbreaking exploration of Sulley's family and background. Thank you so much for filling my prompt!

Thank you so much! Watching MU made me remember just how much I love MI and Sulley in general. I just got this feeling that Sulley was learning about life while he was at University... of course, that was sorta the arc of the film, but that moment when he told Mike that he feels scared all the time just... well, it gave me feels. And I don't know what to do with feels, and apparently they turn into angstfic.

asghsasf Thank you! I just find Sulley too adorable for words, somehow, even when he's an ass at the beginning of the movie. I kinda wish that we'd seen more background for the families of the characters, though.
