Pairings: Canon + Pleakley/Jumba
According to the Disney Wiki, Pleakley is from a race of aliens known as the Plorgonarians. Now, let's say that the Plorgonarians don't have any concept of transgender. It's just not something that comes up, and for centuries, they've just not even thought it was a possibility.
Yes, transgendered Plorgonarians do exist, but it's kept private, and personal, and the idea isn't well known.
Cue Pleakley coming to Earth, and realizing that [s]he just doesn't feel right as a male. Yes, [s]he's felt that way his whole life, but it's never been something he actually thought about, ignoring it and tamping it down to the point of stress, anxiety and illness (which is still better than admitting she's built all wrong.) But, on Earth, she doesn't have to pretend or anything- after all, they don't know him, she can be who she wants!

OP would like to add, if it works better for the lack of trans-awareness to be a cultural thing based on Plorgonarian cultural beliefs and ideas, that would be totally fine too.
