Ariel/Eric, Trigger Warning: child abuse

Ariel had always nursed a fascination for the human world, but that's not why she runs to Ursula and signs away her life as a mermaid. Triton's destructive rage in her grotto wasn't the first time such a scene had taken place -- this time, Ariel was just grateful that it was only her possessions that ended up broken. After years of abuse, she finally summons up the courage to escape for real, instead of just into daydreams. Eric is handsome and seems kind, but it's not infatuation that drives her into his arms -- it's the desperate need for a way out.
Ideally this would end with Eric convincing her to talk about her experiences, being understanding and caring, and helping her begin to heal.

Oh my Poseidon I love you so much. AUs like this normally aren't my cup of tea but...this. Just this. Seconded so hard. I'm practically about to cry.
Question: Did you have anything in mind as to the nature of the abuse or is that up to the filler? There are so many shades of mistreatment and neglect that go beyond the obvious. I'm curious.

As far as the nature of the abuse, I'm seeing Triton being incredibly controlling and domineering, possessive (not in a sexual way, but in a "you're my daughter and you'll do what I tell you!" sort of way) and infantilizing, never letting Ariel out of his sight without a chaperone/spy. He tries to completely control where she goes and who she interacts with. More generally, he's primarily psychologically/emotionally abusive, but every now and then I see it getting physical, when Ariel is being particularly "stubborn" and "willful." Not sexual, though.

A/N: Okay, so I'm not sure whether this has the focus on the recovery that you want, but I tried to go with the supportive Eric angle. Completely disregards the sequel, because I don't feel that the Ariel of this fic would willingly put her daughter behind a wall.

She searches for hours, until she finds a cave in which to hide it. Her sisters are beside themselves by the time that she returns, but reassure them as she might, she cannot help smiling to herself that night when they are asleep. Just for a moment, she was free.
She makes sure that the next time she wears the purple shells, it is a public occasion, where Triton cannot let his true colours be seen. The anger in his eyes is mixed with a peculiar tenderness, and despite her fears, he does not punish her a second time.
Still she continues to sneak out. Her father tries guard after guard, but she outwits them all, and no matter how he corners her and shouts at her afterwards, she feels little but defiance. She needs to feel the wild ocean against her skin. She needs to be freeIt is on one such trip that she finds a fallen handmirror, made such that she cannot help thinking that surely, surely it is of human make. There is still a trade for such things in Atlantica, despite what Triton has tried to enforce, and she finds someone who
