Ariel knows that she is giving up too much, so she never signs Ursula's scroll. She accepts that she can never be human, but she can be a damn fine mermaid. When her father gets old enough to retire, she takes over the throne. She's one of the best rules of the Sea that history has ever known. She's a lot more wise and responsible than she was in her youth, but her trials have taught her empathy and compassion, making her a very popular queen
