Vanessa decides to be a little more subtle while sabotaging the wedding. She lets Ariel think she has won until shortly before the wedding, when she locks her up and steals her gown. Eric, as well as his kingdom, is extremely traditional, particularly concerning marriage. There is no such thing as divorce, and couples are expected to fulfill the "Death do you part" section rather thoroughly. Furthermore, he refuses to see his wife to be before they reach the altar. She's wearing a long veil that completely covers her face. He removes it only when it is time to kiss the bride. His eyes are closed, for maximum romantic effect. He hears everyone gasp, and assumes it is at the sight of Ariel's beautiful face. He opens his eyes after having officially, and permanently,bonded them in matrimony, only to discover that the woman he married was definitely not who he thought she was.
