Ariel gets over her infatuation with Eric soon after Melody is born. She begs her father to turn her back into a mermaid, but he reveals that he can only change her so drastically once. He assumed that the lengths she'd gone to be a human meant that she was sure that was what she wanted to be. All Ariel wants is freedom and adventure. Instead, she's forced into the typical domestic persona of wife and mother. She blames Eric for it. She's a princess of the entire ocean, and because of him she has to settle for being a run of the mill Queen of some small human kingdom. She becomes abusive. At first it's emotional and verbal, but it escalates to the point where it's physical. She'll hit him for the slightest provocation, and if it's a bad day, she'll throw whatever is handy at him. It isn't until she storms into Melody's room, shaking her while yelling about how she ruined her chances of ever being happy, before backhanding her across the face that Eric has had enough.

Ouch, this one hurt.
For some reason, this line really stuck out for me:
"Eric wondered if merbabies were different than humans. Ariel seemed to struggle so much when Melody would cry, the poor girl colicky and restless, sometimes only sleeping an hour a night."
I love how succinct this is, and how Grimm-Brothers the ending was.
