Somehow, I never considered that he was telling the truth (just assumed he wanted to fit in by saying that).

Not the OP but my personal head-canon was that he had an arranged marriage to someone he's had a crush on for a long time and fits the archetype of the "perfect woman" that Mulan had been attempting to live up to. I think of her as the anti-Mulan.

Not the OP, but this is honestly really sweet. It gave Chi Fu some likability, or something. I'm glad this got filled.

I'm glad that it's likability "or something." :D I honestly didn't like Chi Fu in the movie (SEXIST ASS), but I tried to make him nice without being OOC, or giving him some kickass Mulan-ish wife. I hope it worked. :)

Oh, I love this (I'm not the OP, either BTW)! When I first saw Mulan, I didn't care either way for Chi Fu, but here you gave a lot more to his character in such few words. Not only that, it kind of hits me on a personal level because I grew up with a strong military background.

Oh, gosh, thank you! I don't have a military background at all, so all my fics involving war are based on my friends who do. I'm glad you liked it!

oh giiirl, this is beautiful! thank you so much! strangely enough, my favourite kind of story is one where someone has to leave, though they love someone who loves them back so much. it's just the most bittersweet, it just tears me up! this was really really wonderful, everything about it, how quiet it is. thank you soooooooooo much. <3

Thank you, OP! :D I'm glad that you liked the quietness; I tried to make it as un-Mulan as possible, so quiet instead of loud, frail instead of powerful... yeah. XD

Oh, this is just so sweet and sad. I love the delicacy of the characterisation here, the feel of Chi Zhen as the 'perfect' wife that Chi Fu would expect, whilst still being a person in her own right. It gives him another layer as well, which is lovely to see.
