After Phoebus and Esmeralda get together, his friends warn him about her past. They call her a Gypsy whore, and promise him that her ways will not change, that nomads are not suited for domestic life. Contrary to their opinions, Esmeralda was a virgin before she met Phoebus, and she is completely faithful to him. Phoebus is less than innocent. He gives Esmeralda syphilis, which is essentially a death sentence for their time period.
