Post-movie fic coming right up! Admittedly this fill was inspired by the one with Human!Flounder/Ariel but its a different story
It started as a walk in the gardens.
Shang was still getting to know her as Mulan, and Mulan was readjusting to the more feminine behavior expected from women. They were both acknowledged war heroes with medals from the emperor, who had trained and fought side by side, but they didn’t know each other that well. Their resolve to change that had brought long walks in public gardens, and strangers would smile and look fondly at them as one would to a future couple.
And that had been the plan, Mulan knew her exploits would make her incapable of marrying someone she would end up considering her inferior. She needed someone like Shang, who had seen and done as much as she had, who would understand her. Shang shared that mutual feeling, he wanted someone he could converse freely with and not break easily. By some unspoken agreement things would have worked that way

Morning saw Shang again visiting, bringing gifts of good will. His three most loyal subordinates helped carry them into the house while Shang exchanged pleasantries with his future in-laws. Mushu claimed he didn’t sleep well and stayed in his room, but Mulan didn’t want to disappoint her happy parents and so played host to her friends and future husband
