First part done, second should be up later today or tomorrow.
Focuses a bit more on the embarassed/ashamed Shang that OP might have wanted. This doesn't reflect my own opinions on anything but how I thought such actions might be viewed or stigmatized in the canon.
Also, I know pretty much nothing about China, ancient or otherwise. So everything is coming through the filter of my modern western understanding of the world, limited as that is.

“I’d like to try something…different.” Was how Shang broached the topic. He immediately regretted how he’d said it because he could tell from Mulan’s face that it wasn’t going to be nearly enough and he would need to explain.
“Okay,” she said slowly, rolling onto her side to look at him through the dark. Her hair, still cut short and flat like a solider was so dark it appeared to fade into the shadows, leaving behind just her face to look back at him through the night.
“What do you want to try?”
Shang’s tongue felt like it had seized up. Even getting out those few words had cost him days and weeks of effort, and behind that there had been months of want. He swallowed hard. He’d come this far and if he wasn’t going to tell her exactly what he wanted there had been no point in bringing it up in the first place

Shang would find himself thinking about it randomly over the next couple of days. While doing chores or sparring his mind would provide an image that had first come to him as he had trained his first batch of soldiers. He couldn’t really say when it had started. Ping had irritated him at first but as the weeks of training had continued Shang would find himself watching him out of the corner of his eye

Embarassed!Shang, Reassuring!Mulan
