My Hand to God

There have been a handful of peaceniks gathering on the town plaza, fairly regularly for the past few years. My understanding is that they may be an offshoot of the Deaniacs and I don't know if they're there every day, but they are holding their signs and standing across from the Post Office, pretty much every late afternoon ( Read more... )

After one of the televised debates, President Carter became the subject of ridicule because he said that he had asked Amy, what she thought was the most important issue at the time. Not only did his opponent make hay with the line, but so did Johnny Carson and other comedians. There was even a very famous editorial cartoon reprinted around the country which showed Jimmy and Amy sitting in her treehouse discussing foreign policy. I often find myself having to explain complex issues to my daughter and though they don't always work out so well, that I'll quickly post a transcript before starting dinner, there is something to be said for breaking a subject down to where it can be understood by a child.

You did a much better job than I did when I tried to explain the war to my son. I'm so cribbing from this and pretending I thought of it all by myself.

Your daughter is so blessed to have you.

As my daughter ran ahead to make the potty, I did think that my explanation must've made sense because it seemed to satisfy her question. I don't always do so well, later on last night, I was flipping around the television dial and stopped for a few seconds on the Jane Seymour sitcom. I was kind of interested to see how bad it was, but when she told one of the male leads that he needed to get laid and my daughter asked what "get laid" means; I started back to flipping through the channels and told her it was a grown-up show, before reminding her that she needed to practice her piano.

This was an excellent explanation. I always admire when parents explain things without dumbing them down too much. Rest assured that even if she didn't grasp everything you said, she'll remember it later (hopefully). I still remember my dad explaining such topics as tornadoes and hurricanes and war, so thumbs up to you.
