Oh my, this was lovely! Beautiful, thoughtful writing and spot-on characterisations and scene setting. I could literally see them, sitting there in the car, rain pouring down.... I was going to copy and paste my favourite bits but it would have been the entire piece! Thank you for this, I loved it.

[T]hen there was a jostling beside him, against him, and Bodie was there, the full force of him, an elbow in his ribs, rubbing his hands together, that irrepressible look of a job-well-done loud on his face.

“Pack it in, Bodie,” Doyle growled, because he just couldn’t take it tonight. “I’m not in the mood.”

He could almost hear Bodie changing course.

“Yeah, well,” Bodie said, squinting out into the night and the rain. “Don’t blame you. She had us all fooled.”

I love this bit. I can really see Bodie as you describe him. And both his initial attempt to impart his own mood to Ray and his slightly labored switch to engaging with Ray's mood seem very in character.

I could so see this happening, Doyle not sure, still wanting something else. Bodie, patient, perhaps always knowing that Doyle would come back to him. Such a lovely story.
