Keep Moving

I told people at work today that the race "was tons of fun," but that's the type of thing you say after the fact, when memories of the actual running are joined by memories of stepping onto the Piedmont Park meadow and getting my t-shirt and a tepid bottle of water, and meeting my sister and talking about how great it was going to be to go home for ( Read more... )

Most beginner half-marathon and marathon training schedules, in my opinion, are too high in mileage. I kept getting injured following the Hal Higdon beginner plan because it wanted me to run 4-5 times a week. This year I've run two half-marathons and a full marathon on only 2 days a week of running, and I finished all of them just fine. If you ever need advice, let me know!

Wow, two days a week of training wouldn't be bad at all! During my first failed half-marathon training attempt, I was running about 6 days a week, which eventually left me unable to walk for a while. Currently, I do about three days a week because I try not to be too much of a weekend warrior.

Do you have a 2-day or 3-day training schedule that you could point me to online, or did you come up with your schedule on your own?

Just curious.. do they keep track of what place each of the 55,000 runners finish in?

No, thank God! That would be a really huge and thankless job for someone! Anyone who's being timed has to qualify beforehand through running another 10K at some point during the year. If their time's low enough, they get sent a little electronic chip in the mail, and they run the 4th of July race with the chip on their shoe. It's only the top 1000 or so runners that get to do that. People much speedier than I. ;)

I have been driving around for days in the New Hampshire sunlight with my head bobbing along to that New Pornographers album. I may be addicted. Great song.

And congrats on finishing the race.

Thanks!

Every time I put that New Pornographers' CD in my car's CD player, it tends to stay there for about two weeks. I'm in one of those two-week periods right now, in fact. One of these days I've gotta get back to the audiobook I was listening to before Twin Cinema sucked me in again.

hey Laurie, do you use any sort of software/online log/spreadsheet to track your mileage?

Nope, I am pretty low-tech. I used to use FitDay, but I find it easier to just jot down my mileage in a notebook than go to my computer and log in to a website (which always results in my checking e-mail, reading my LJ friends page, reading news sites...). If you want to use a program, though, FitDay's really comprehensive and easy to use.
