When it's Friday evening and you're walking around the apartment shooting insults at bath towels, torchere lamps, anoraks, and empty wine bottles, pretending that they are the person you're supposed to meet for lunch tomorrow, you should be earnest and intuitive enough with yourself to know that it's a fine time to hit the workout room and bike ( Read more... )

I will have to try that controlled breathing while running. I'm running my first 10K in a bit over 3 weeks, and don't seem all that ready (currently stuck at 6K). Have you checked out the 8-week training program by Hal Higdon?

Good luck!

That's the one I've been using! I started it with six weeks to go, and I' ve been busy and went out of town last weekend, so I've not stuck to it exactly, but it's been a good guide for me, especially when telling myself that I'm only supposed to do one long run every week and not kill myself trying to run as far as possible every day.

Good luck to you, too!

Thanks! I was able to crank out about 6 miles on a very swampy, humid trail this morning, and after that I am feeling much more confident.

Have you thought about trying a 10K? Honestly, once I was able to do 5K, the jump up to 10K wasn't too hard. Your adrenaline kicks in after a certain point, and soon it becomes harder to stop running than to just continue on until you finish. Being able to do the first 5K is the hard part, and you've already done that!

I haven't done an official 5k yet. I am thinking about doing one in September or October, but I am really scared. I have only been running for a few months and just recently got up to running about 3 miles. I'm not even sure exactly how far I've been running because I don't have anything to measure distance.

Just reading about your accomplishments is really encouraging though! I know you will do great on your 10k!

I love reading your entries.

I'm going to invest in a pair of good running shoes and start running again.

Aww, thank you.

I recommend New Balance for the running shoes. That's the only brand I buy anymore. They're made in the USA with very fair labor practices -- no sweatshops. They're very, very sturdy and generally awesome.

i used to run cross country & track in high school. my friends and i used to recite the words to hanson's album "middle of nowhere." we just did it in order to concentrate on something besides the physical act of running. :)

What I want to know is, why did Adam have to RENT E.S.B.? He should not only own that, but the entire trillogy in both VHS and DVD format . . . Like me! B-) LOL
