RQ11: When you say "I am sorry", do you mean you are sad, or do you mean you regret having done something?

It depends.

If someone has just told me about something unfortunate that happened to them (or something related) and I say "I'm sorry" I mean because I'm sad for them.

If I've done something wrong to someone, then it's an expression of regret.

I never say "I am sorry" when something happens to someone and it is sad like their parents dies. It sounds odd to me.
I say "I am sorry" when I have done or said something that I regret having done or said.

I'm female and live in Boston.
