the traveling pants series is like the teenage version of sex and the city. all of the characters are fairly relative and their personalities are exaggerated to that you feel more like one or the other depending on the situation. it's really nice to feel like you can relate, even to fictional characters.
And just be yourself. If it works, it works. When you TRY to be someones expectations but really aren't, that's when it goes sour. I think you guys are working out nicely though. Even if I've yet to meet him. But, just be James.
