Haruhi leaned her head against the wall of the department store and felt the rough stone press grooves into her cheek. She was sitting in a little alleyway, legs bent in front of her and peeking out of the alcove’s mouth. The dreary grey light of late afternoon washed over her and the rubble in the street.
Her cell phone was in her pocket, turned off. She wondered if she’d have any use for it, now that she had that strange device she’d talked to Hikaru and the others on. It would be dead if she kept it on for long anyway, and she wasn’t sure she could recharge it here. There were no lights in the clothing stores along the street, no electricity - and no people. The eerie silence had her wrapping her arms around her thighs and setting her chin on her knees, scanning the street for any sign of Hikaru or Hunny.
Once or twice she heard far-off rustling, noise filtering through brick walls and glass doors. She scooted back a bit, further into the shadows. A person she’d been speaking to, Johnny, told her to be wary of monsters in the area. Haruhi was still not entirely convinced of their existence, but she wasn’t asking for a sign either.
