SUMMER PLOT OF SO MUCH STUFF I DON'T EVEN

Jun 03, 2011 19:10

Before anything else, I'd like to give a shout-out to ASHLEY, CAT, SHUGO, AND REMA who are all wonderful people and have been some extra helpful angels in the past few months. I love you guys ♥

So! Now that it's summer, it's ADVENTURE TIME. It's a big plot, which is actually more like an excuse to expand things with several small plots thrown in. Run around, scavenge, have fun, and give your characters awful ailments. Get chewed up by familiar creatures, creeped on by new ones, and find some new... everything.

SYNOPSIS:
Your characters will be asked by the Scientists to leave the city, travel to some distant areas (most already explored, others not), and then stay there for a little while.

AND NOW FOR DETAILS.

Sometime this week, Q will announce that it might be best to head out of the city for a while. Why? Well, she'll give you her reasons. Discedo's going to be pretty bad off for a bit. The important thing is that she'll explain where you can go and some basics how to get there. The route has surely changed since the world's hey-day, but you can still find your destinations. Even better, you guys are getting some help with transportation.

You're probably sitting here going WHERE THE HELL ARE WE GOING WHAT'S GOING ON. Hold on, I'm getting to that!

A LITTLE BACKGROUND STORY
Once upon a time, there were two cities. One was called Discedo, one was called Accido. They hated each other. This was a hatred that can only be compared to the hatred Ravens fans have for the Steelers. Fucking Steelers. Even after the collapse of civilization, the remnants of this age-old rivalry lingered. Disease, spy satellites, coded bombs, invasions, and double agents marked only a portion of a seemingly endless war. Many of you have seen this during your time in the city. And for the most part, it seems like Accido has been the only one on the offensive.

Not anymore.

Remember those survival packs, bikes, and other stuff given out? Yup. That's gonna come in handy pretty soon. At 5:36am on Friday June 10th, the electricity will flicker and the ground will rumble. Nothing else really out of the ordinary, unless you look out your window or go to the roof and look to the Northern horizon. Then you're going see this:

Yup. That's a mushroom cloud. (Although from your characters' point of view, it will probably appear more like this.) You get to see the sunrise along with a nuclear explosion. How pretty.

Now, the good news is that it looks like it's several hundred miles away. The bad news is fallout can travel that distance in under a day. Now you understand why they've been asking you to leave. Discedo is going to be a nasty place for quite a while. The good news is, if you heed Q's advice and with the help of some new shiny items, you can make it out of the city and camp out for a while.

At this point you're probably wondering why this is all happening. Why now? Why such a drastic measure? Is it all the Scientists' fault? If you ask this, you'll probably get some evasive answers, but maybe this is for the best. Maybe there was something nasty a-brewin' over that way that someone was trying to put a stop to. Maybe it's too late and something worse is on the way. ...GUESS YOU'LL JUST HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE, HUH?

But enough of that. Q will give you some basic directions: head Northwest across the lake, Southeast over the mountains, or East into the forest. Some of you may already know what you'll find in these places, since they've already seen a little exploration. Details on what to find the routes will be given in a follow-up post after the bomb goes off SO LET'S FINALLY EVALUATE WHERE YOU CAN GO.

Spero
Estimated travel time: 5-6 days sailing.

Head northwest across the lake and you'll find Spero. This is probably the most familiar of all the places, thanks to both previous explorations and the AU event. Anyway, for those unfamiliar, Spero is a city much the same as Discedo, though a bit smaller. It has seen similar damage but still has a lot to offer. The shopping mall, hospital, university, and an observatory are all still there with plenty of supplies and discoveries to offer. Of course, some other things are too.

Since several characters already have large boats, those will be your ticket to getting across the lake. A week's worth of food and water as well as some spare parts will be found on the boats the morning of the bomb. In addition, you'll find an assortment of shotguns, one elephant gun on the boats, and ammo for the guns. You'll probably need these once you get there.

The sailing there will be slow and somewhat tricky due to shifting winds. Since the fallout is traveling mostly southwest, those sailing may risk getting caught in acid rain. The effects will be much more mild than what Discedo will encounter, but the risk remains.

Dissimulo
Estimated travel time: 4-5 days through the mountains.

Southeast through the mountains is Dissimulo. This small town has also been explored, but to a much lesser extent. Aside from some houses and shops, there are only two notable things about this farming community: the subway and the prison camp. The subway leads into Discedo, but some disrepair means that more sections of the tunnel have collapsed since characters' first visit. The good news is that the train itself is in working condition if you can get the tunnels fixed up again! The bad news is that prison camp. You remember the one. The one where some supernatural events brutally killed nearly all of the exploration team? Yeah. If you head in that direction, you might want to stay away from that for a while.

Characters going in this direction get the use of Conestoga wagons. Yup. You get to Oregon Trail this bitch. There will be two wagons in addition to four oxen and spare parts in order to get there. YOU THINK I'M KIDDING BUT I'M NOT.

The path there is partially road, mostly mountainous terrain. Wildlife and disease may slow you down slightly.

Discedo
Let's say you're really attached to the city and don't want to leave. That's okay! You can totally stick around if you want to brave the incoming fallout. There certainly won't be a shortage of things to do in-city, since buildings will become corroded and repairs will need to be made. There certainly won't be a shortage of danger either.

However, if you decide to stay, you'll notice that the shelves will slowly be depleted of supplies. Food and bottled water will be delievered into the city, but characters will find them in creates at the platform in the Discedo subway, since the fallout and haze will be much less down there. Hell if the Scientists want to risk inhaling radiation.

???
Estimated travel time: 11 days-???

What stands out East remains a bit of a mystery. There isn't a guarantee that you'll find refuge out there, though you will find something. It might not be what you're looking for, but if your curiosity gets the best of you, this is an option that will at least keep you safe from acid rain.

Food, water, you know the drill. Two carts, three donkeys, and a single llama will be afforded for exploring this way! As said, the trail is through the forest. The further out you go, the more dense and lush it'll become. That'll offer a fresh chance of scenery, but will make navigating that much harder.

ADDITIONAL ITEMS:
This goes back to the items given out last month. Any new characters will be given this. The key thing from this, if your character is unchipped and intends to travel, are the Dictaphones (tape recorders). These have continuous playback and are battery-operated. Their function? Shark cage. (It also works on all of the conceptual fish but SHARKS ARE THE WORST SO YEAH.) You can use your communicators while inside your "cage", but it might be safer to set your comm outside of the loop and talk into it. So this time around, characters will find themselves with:

✗ A small note with instructions:
Place tapes inside recorders, set one in each corner of the room (or whatever area you define as your space), make sure they're set to continuous play, then begin playback on all tapes. It is ill-advised that you use electronic devices while inside. CAUTION: DO NOT BREAK TAPES.
✗ 20 batteries. Their life span is approximately two weeks with continuous use. Pretty kickass batteries, huh?
✗ Four tapes. They play for about an hour and a half on a loop. You can choose one of following sets of tapes:
--No noise. The recordings are either too high above or too far below the range of human hearing, so nothing will be heard when they're played.
--Daily lives. This set of tapes seems to be recordings of four different people. They don't always talk, and when they do, it's never anything substantial. It mostly seems to be a recording of people going about their household chores--clattering of dishes, doors opening and closing, dogs barking in the distance. When all tapes are played together on a low volume, it mostly becomes white noise.
--Clicking. Sounds like a light switch being clicked on and off and random times. All four tapes have a different pattern and become indecipherable when played together. It could be a code... or it could just be random. You never know!

All characters will be given these, but this really is only important to unchipped characters.

SOME QUESTIONS YOU PROBABLY HAVE:

How are apps being run?
We will be skipping the app cycle next Sunday, then apps will be processed as normal with a few stipulations. New characters will randomly selected to either arrive at Discedo's hospital, Dissumlo's subway station, or Spero's ship yard (unless one place is utterly devoid of characters, in which case characters will just be placed wherever the bulk of the population may be).

What about death?
All characters regardless of location will be revived at the Discedo hospital because life sucks. On that subject, death is much more likely to come in Discedo than in any other place.

And chip removals?
Well, here's where the death part may come in. Anyone who has their chip removed in Discedo now risks a chance of death due to the hazardous and increasingly unsanitary conditions. Dissimulo and the forest have no medical facilities, so any doctors traveling there will want to bring tools with them. Spero does have a hospital with supplies, but those too will have to be cleaned and the hospital cleared of any critters hanging around.

How long will the event last?
Tricky question. The catastrophic effects on Discedo will only last a few weeks and more things will happen in the different places, but you're free to travel around from here on out. This is sorta like a catalyst for more cool things to come, so a lot depends on what you guys want once Discedo goes back to semi-normal!

Will I be able to communicate other people in other places?
Easily! Knowlton had recently updated the communicators' range, so anyone in Spero can talk to Dissimulo etc. without any problems or interference. At the farthest distance, the most you might hear is a little background static, but beyond that characters will be able to talk to each other no matter where they are.

Can I travel between the different places or am I stuck in one place?
Characters are free to travel wherever they please! Since CR may be split up, of course characters will want to travel around. This will take some coordination between characters, especially if you want to head to Spero, but it's entirely possible if you don't mind a long and strenuous journey. Keep in mind that it will take a little over a week to get from Spero to Dissimulo with current supplies.

This is a lot going on! How are we going to keep track?
A temporary post will be put up so that both new and current players can keep a track as to what's going on. It will detail the basic timeline of the plot, then players will be able to comment with any important events or open player plots.

WHERE THE SHIT IS MY CR GOING? GUYS. WHERE ARE WE GOING???
In addition to the "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON" post, a plotting post will be put up very shortly! You'll be able to use it throughout the event if you so wish, but for now it'll serve what you guys want to do initially.

Do we have to leave right when the bomb hits?
ICLY? Nope, but the longer you wait, the more you'll risk not making it out for quite some time. Characters have a 10-12 hour IC window to depart before shit gets real. OOCly, I don't expect everyone to be awake at 5 in the morning EST. Anyone is allowed to back date posting/assume things depending on your situation. So let's say you've been absent for a while or are going to be gone during the time your character might want to leave: you can simply comment to the plotting post and be like "HEY, SO-AND-SO HITCHED A RIDE" and you're good!

SUMMARY:
Mushroom cloud on the horizon and impending effects means you'll want to evacuate to either Dissimulo, Spero, or the mysteries of the forest. Staying behind is possible but not advised. Q's announcement will come before this Friday, which is when the bomb will go off. More information will come that day as to what will happen in the city and on characters' journeys. ICly, characters have a 10-12 hour window to escape.

I'll finish this with a note that we're in the process of organizing all of our information posts and whatnot, so bear with us while we get it all sorted! The temporary posts above will likely be incorporated into more general info posts in the future, but for the mean time they'll just be around to make your lives hopefully easier. The monster list is next on our list, where we'll be cleaning it up, adding the conceptual fish and some other things.
