Obviously, Jonny and Romola don't have a wide enough age gap, but that's something I think we'll always have to accept with Emma adaptations, and I'm a huge fan of both of them, so I can deal with that.
They did manage to capture so much of the minutiae of the novel, so that bodes well for the adaptation.
I didn't like the last Sense & Sensibility adaptation, so I hope this one is better.
I liked some parts of S&S but so far I'm liking Emma better. Possibly because I just really like Emma herself, which is unusual for an Emma adaptation IMO. Yeah, Jonny and Romola have a 10 year age gap but so did Kate Beckinsale and Mark Strong in the 90s Emma, while Jeremy Northam and Gwyneth Paltrow had an 11 year gap *leaves imdb alone (for now)*. I don't think the gap matters that much now. As long as its a relatively substantial gap, its all good.
I love Emma the novel and Emma the character so, in the manner of a typical Austen fangirl, I was being super picky about everything. However, Romola has been quite good so far! The casting in general seems quite good; Michael Gambon is hilarious as poor Mr. Woodhouse. I was dying over his obsession with the cake.
My main issue (and it isn't really a big problem) is the narration. I don't think it's necessary in the first place, and I also don't like that JLM is doing it. Hearing Mr. Knightley's voice describing Emma's thoughts and feelings gives him some sort of power over her. I don't know, it irks me. But we'll see how it progresses...I'm excited to see more!!
I love Romola as Emma, she is very funny. But I still like Mark Strong's Knightley better. He's much more intense and the age gap is there. The whole adaptation seems much more upbeat and more funny than the others. And you are right about the modern expressions, they are amusing :)
Its in 4 parts. Can't wait! I don't think any costume drama can be done in 90 minutes. A longer adaptation can hopefully capture all the nuances of the book.
I completely agree about the argument. I haven't read the book and their long confrontation really gave me a lot of prospective. It was intense too, for the first time btw them ot didn't feel like a childish quarrel. It actually established them as a potential couple really early on, while with the other adaptations I didn't feel IT almost up until the picnic scene.
