There are things that you just can’t fight like inertia or gravity - like love.

His first day as a trainee in SM Entertainment isn’t anywhere near that of a superstar’s first day in showbiz. He almost arrives late for his first class, almost misses the roll call and almost gets scolded by his dance instructor on the very first day. Way to make an impression, he remembers the instructor saying, and he also remembers mumbling something under this breath while incessantly bowing to his professor - Only human, dammit. Just new. Argh.

He’s not himself, he thinks, on that first day. No, not anywhere near the true him.

He might’ve just made the greatest mistake of his life.

The succeeding days aren’t as bad as he has always thought they would be. He arrives at SM earlier than the call time, successfully carries out the assigned task for their dance and voice lessons and impresses his dance instructor. See, you could do things right. He takes some pride in being praised, even if there’s a tinge of spite dripping from the instructor’s words. Someday, I’ll do better.

That week, he tells himself, Hey, I can actually be a star. He pauses for a while, thinks things thoroughly.

I… want to sing.

A couple of months into being a trainee, he fits into the place so perfectly. He comes to befriend some of the stars that SM handles. He discovers that Park Yoochun is a very sweet hyung and that Park Heebon is such a darling. He thinks he even develops a fondness for Isak somewhere along the way. Towards the end of the month, a new trainee is accepted, and said new trainee is first introduced to him because you’re of the same age, one of the older trainees tell him.

He could easily say it is love at first sight - maybe, but not quite like it; he’s special. This boy… is nowhere near anyone he’s seen before. The boy’s got his hair all over his face, but there’s this small smile tugging at his lips that is tempting him to walk up to the boy, extend a hand and say hi. But that’s not like him. A hyung pushes him forward, grins at him through crooked teeth. The boy looks at him intently. He’s got a disarming smile.

I’m Jonghyun. Kim Jonghyun. He admits to being scared to extend his hand - it’s the point of no return - but does so, anyway. And I’m Jinki. Lee Jinki.

It doesn’t take too long before they get to know each other - him and the boy, Jonghyun. Jonghyun’s a bit too talkative for his own good, and he sometimes wonders how Jonghyun could look so meek and tiny with all the talking he does. You know, he tells Jonghyun midway through lunch - they’re eating the sandwiches he prepared this morning, I don’t understand you sometimes. Jonghyun chuckles, laughs out loud. You don’t need to. It takes a while before it sinks in - Jonghyun is weird and twisted and demented; somewhere in his subconscious, he thinks it’s amusing.

Say, let’s skip class today. He raises an eyebrow at Jonghyun and the other laughs. He shakes his head; Jonghyun pulls him by the wrist and, the next thing he knows, they’re out of the building and his sandwich is all over the street.

Let go of me, Kim Jonghyun! But he doesn’t mean it. Really.

People come and go, and it’s one of those days that they have to plaster smiles on their faces after a hard day’s work just so they could show the new trainees that they’re enjoying themselves. Jonghyun leans in, whispers something by his ear - That guy is too tall; he’s scary. He tries hard to suppress the laughter threatening to spill from his lips, hits Jonghyun’s side with his elbow just lightly. Shut up, we’ll get caught.

The abnormally tall guy’s name, he soon discovers, is Choi Minho (Such a cute name for someone that big, Jonghyun exclaims and shakes Minho’s hand all too happily; he tries to not look at the weird scene that Jonghyun has created); the quiet guy’s name, meanwhile, is Kim Kibum, and their entire dance class bursts into laughter the moment they hear the other guy’s name. No, really. Seriously! Kim Kibum? The quiet guy just nods, smiles faintly. (Isn’t he just adorable? Jonghyun’s doing the ‘grabby hands’ gesture this time, and he hits Jonghyun on the arm just so the other would stop.)

Let’s form an alliance. Jonghyun always comes up with the weirdest of ideas. (He likes it.) Jonghyun places his hand at the center of the small circle they’ve created during the getting-to-know session. He’s the first one to join the tirade; the other two follow suit.

He soon discovers that Minho’s a pretty cool guy, and that Kibum is pretty amused with his name himself. I actually wanted to joke my mom and ask her if she named me after Kibum hyung. Kibum sounds drunk when he laughs; it makes him laugh, too. Why didn’t you? Jonghyun almost bolts up when Minho comes up with the statement. Kibum has his eyes wide. Minho, you don’t say… you’re serious about that?

It’s a crazy kind of friendship, this thing they’ve got. Jonghyun’s too close, laughing against his hair, resting his chin on his shoulder afterwards. We’ve got amusing friends, don’t you think? He chuckles, tilts his head so that he’d be closer to Jonghyun. You’re still an alien, though. You’re the weirdest of us all. Jonghyun doesn’t even try to suppress his laughter; he sues Jonghyun for making his ears the other’s microphone. Jonghyun’s next few sentences just ring in his ear - the laughter reverberates in his ears.

He mumbles something under his breath; he’s sure Jonghyun doesn’t hear. No - Jonghyun mustn’t hear it. I hope we stay like this forever.

The alliance’s rules and regulations are tweaked a bit when a new trainee enters the scene. No way. He’s not just - No way! They’ve all got their eyes wide open as the new boy in town dances to the tune of Backstreet Boys' Backstreet’s Back. The introductory number comes to an end and the new boy bows, tells them his name. It’s the smile that does them in. I’m Lee Taemin. Minho’s smiling that weird smile of his; Kibum is nodding appreciatively at Taemin’s introduction. Jonghyun, meanwhile, is bouncing on the balls of his feet. He sharply turns his attention to Jonghyun. He’s so cute! And it’s the cute mantra all over again.

They get Taemin to join the alliance in the weirdest of ways - they challenge Taemin to a dance battle; they naturally lose, but Taemin tells them that they’re really amusing hyung deul and that he wants to play with them. Taemin is dubbed the mascot of their alliance - no one could resist that charm. Two weeks into Taemin getting in SM, they hold a celebration at the McDonald’s nearby.

Our group is composed of the best of the best. Jonghyun’s twirling spaghetti around his fork, feeds it to him, instead. Minho’s our master rapper, Taemin’s our dancer, and Kibum, you and I are the singers. Isn’t that great? He doesn’t reckon Jonghyun’s drunk - they’re drinking rootbeer, not beer. We’ll conquer the world so easily - I can see it now! Minho shakes his head; Taemin asks what the entire thing is about. Kibum chuckles. Jonghyun’s starting his what mantra; it's the I didn't start it look on his face again. He shakes his head. It’s world domination right off the bat.

The time for them to shine has come. They don’t expect it to be so early - they only remember being told that SM has plans of launching them soon, but not this soon. Six months. You’re debuting in six months. The manager is smiling at them - he might be the one handling them for the rest of their days as members of this group called SHINee. Taemin’s smile is too blinding. Minho is grinning and laughing and practically dancing with Kibum. Kibum’s got a wide smile spread across his lips. Jonghyun’s eyes are wide in disbelief, but there’s a smile tugging on his lips. He’s smiling, just smiling, one hand grasping Jonghyun’s so tightly.

You’re going to be the lead singer, Jonghyun. They’ve always seen it coming, but it’s different when it’s coming from their manager. Jonghyun looks at him, eyes telling him, No, I can’t do this. The manager turns to him, chuckles lightly. And you’re going to be the leader, Jinki. Jonghyun’s features change from worried to relieved to ecstatic - Jonghyun’s gripping his hand tightly, too. He looks at Jonghyun - Let’s do this? Jonghyun nods, smile dripping with unexplainable happiness. Together - we’ll conquer the world.

He turns to the manager, nods and bows, feels tears cascading down his cheeks. Taemin is the first to ask what’s wrong; Minho places a hand on his shoulder - We’re with you, hyung. Kibum’s saying something so faintly; he catches the last bit - As one family. Jonghyun takes his other hand, places it on his heart. This - this is where everything starts. Here, a new galaxy is formed, one filled with stars.

Jinki - I mean Onew. He tilts his head to the right as if saying I can hear you. He knows it’s Jonghyun; he can’t be mistaken. This dream, we’re going to make it come true, right? He counts the starts in the sky, sees only five and nothing more. Of course, we will. Together. Jonghyun smiles just faintly, chuckles. We should start setting out on a journey, then. It’ll be a long ride. He laughs at Jonghyun’s attempt to assume the place of the lead singer - it actually works. We’re flying, Jonghyun, not running or driving. Flying. We have time.

And Jonghyun-
Mm?
It’s Jinki. It always will be.
A-ah.

Jonghyun puts an arm around his shoulder and he leans in. They count the stars again and again just to make sure that five of them shine so brightly.

There are things that you just can’t fight like inertia or gravity - like love.
