Things are not always what they seem.

Take, for example, the supposed sempai-kouhai relationship between Echizen and Momoshiro. Momoshiro, the sempai, guides Echizen, the kouhai, to a path filled with tennis and tennis balls and rackets, however, in their relationship, both of them are neither sempai nor kouhai. They are simply… them.

Example number two would be Kaidoh, lifelong rival of Momoshiro. He hates the latter, yes, but that is only because he appreciates every single part of Momoshiro. He hates the fact that the dunk smasher is indeed better than him. But he hates Echizen more for putting a distance between him and Momoshiro.

A fight was the only was to get close to the burger addict, and Echizen blew everything. Perhaps Momoshiro just doesn’t find snakes appealing.

But Inui sure does. And Kaidoh does not know that.

Then there us the Golden Pair - Kikumaru and Oishi.

They are inseparable. Yeah. Sure, they are. Even after tennis practice, they’d spend time together, talking about random stuff, tennis, Ryuuzaki-sensei, Tezuka being stiff, Fuji, Fuji, and Fuji.

Oh, and Fuji too, has Kikumaru mentioned that?

Kikumaru has always found the tensai a mystery, constantly engulfed by the waves of the sea. And everytime Fuji reveals a bit of himself, the sound of the waves call out to the acrobat, telling him to pry more, to delve deeper so that there would be no room for escape.

That smile is a sin. And Kikumaru just loves being a sinner.

Oishi would ask Kikumaru why he hasn't told Fuji yet, of his feelings. Kikumaru just sighs, and mentions the buchou's name. Tezuka, Oishi asks in sheer astonishment.

Then Oishi chuckles and leaves Kikumaru behind, giving the latter a wink before he leaves.

Kikumaru's mobile phone beeps. He fishes his phone from his pocket and smiles upon seeing the name of the sender of the message. His smile widens as he sees the message.

I hope you don't mind me cutting your chit-chat with Oishi. It's just that I miss my Eiji.

What's with that smile, Kikumaru hears as the door opens. Kikumaru looks up from his phone and shakes his head. He then gets his things and stops just in front of the newcomer.

Tezuka, he asks. Fuji just shakes his head. I said I miss my Eiji, right? That's all that Fuji says, and Kikumaru just doesn't get it. Perhaps he never will.

... Until Fuji takes his hand and drags him out of the lockeroom along with all his things and everything else that belongs to him.

And then Kikumaru sees the sky, tangerine hues shivering in fear and doubt, soft blues kissing all those worries away.

He looks at Fuji and gives him a smile.

Things are not always what they seem, after all.
