Balance Beam

It was not so long ago when Fuji Syusuke first fell in love.

A girl from his class approached him with a big smile on her face asking for help in their English assignment. The girl wasn’t attractive, not the least bit, and the smile on the girl’s lips that Syusuke saw as that of an angel’s was nowhere near one. It was more of a lopsided grin. It might have been cliché and overly farfetched if he concluded that, at that moment, it was already love. But to hell with that, of course. It wasn’t as if he did mind whether or not it would sound stupid. That was how he felt.

Syusuke was only six years old then, and he saw his world crumble before him when he found out that that girl was his cousin. So much for his first stab at falling in love.

He hadn’t fallen in love since then, even if there were women, attractive and simply exquisite alike, flocking him like mad. Not even when a girl confessed her eternal and undying love for him. Such an experience was just too much to handle for someone Syusuke’s age.

So when he encountered love in the face of a friend he has known only for a year, there was doubt on his side of the party and relatively nothing on the other’s side. Such was the fate he had been bestowed with and he had to endure for the entirety of his existence.

Was it not totally unheard of that with every contact of the ball against concrete, the distance between two people are being bridged by every spin implied on the ball, every stroke, every swing? Was it anything but absurd that the test of love was tennis in all its majesty and glory?

It may be for those of the common mind, but for Syusuke, it was possible in ever single way. He was Syusuke, after all.

So when he decided to be his friend’s ‘pillar of support’, one-man cheering squad, and all the other things only a fool would do for someone so special, he decided that it was best that he shun all those feelings away, especially when he found out that his friend had been eyeing someone for quite some time already.

But when he was first kissed - and he kissed back - by a man his age even, he decided that he was the one who was foolish, and partaking in the activities he had indulged in some two years ago was certainly not the best thing to do.

Especially now that he no longer needed to be the ‘pillar of support’ or something of that sort.

Kikumaru Eiji, Syusuke mused, was the first person to make him look stupid.

And frankly, he liked it.

Really.
