Under the Moon and the Morning Sky

Fuji Syusuke was a work of art.

His body build may not be that of a fine young man’s, but his tennis skills backed it up. To run across the court wasn’t just to run. It was to run with grace and absolute elegance. That was the name of the game for Fuji - aesthetics.

Fuji was very particular with the way he looked.

Beauty Tip from Fuji Syusuke Number One: If you want to stay up late yet don’t want to have eye bags, close your eyes. It works all the time. For Fuji, at least.

Fuji stayed up late for a couple of reasons. The first was due to Tezuka’s penchant for having matches with Fuji. And the Seigaku tensai, the Fuji that he was, just couldn’t say no. After all, he didn’t really mind. Another was Fuji’s need to finish his assignments. He couldn’t possibly go to school without finishing his work. Finally, Fuji waited for Kikumaru’s call.

Of course Fuji didn’t really want to listen to Kikumaru’s escapades with Oishi and how absolutely marvelous the new toothpaste Kikumaru’s sister bought for him was. Much as he wouldn’t want it, he needed to listen or he’ll never hear the end of it. And usually, at around 3 a.m., they’d finally finish talking. Or at least Kikumaru would.

And with tomorrow’s promise of sunshine, he’d go through the same old boring routine.

However, this was one of those rare occasions when Kikumaru didn’t even say a single word. Fuji was, naturally, surprised at the sudden occurrence of an event. Never, and he repeated the word never, had Kikumaru acted like such. The only thing that Fuji could ask was if Kikumaru was fine.

Clearly, he wasn’t.

Beauty Tip from Fuji Syusuke Number Two: If you want to understand the entire story being narrated to you by your friend, meet up with him. Yes, even if it’s already three in the morning. If that doesn’t work [or if he can’t meet up with you], just go to his place and hug him tight. Keep those eyes shut so that he won’t realize you’re not feeling good as well. If you don’t know how to do that, it’s already your problem.

Kikumaru and Oishi had a fight. Clearly, it was another misunderstanding. Oishi wasn’t really the type who would get angry because of Kikumaru’s childish tendencies, but it was one of those days when he had a hard time with life and his family. With Oishi’s dad partially paralyzed due to a car accident, Oishi had to do all sorts of things to support his family. It was just too much for a Junior High student.

Yet, Fuji stressed, Kikumaru was just trying to cheer him up. Kikumaru was exerting an exorbitant amount of effort just to make a smile resurface on his lover’s lips. And here came Oishi, brushing him off and suddenly lashing out words that were not only highly uncharacteristic of him but also not apt for their current situation.

Kikumaru probably couldn’t reason out to Oishi. Kikumaru didn’t really tell all these to Fuji, but he knew Fuji understood. He always had.

Beauty Tip from Fuji Syusuke Number Three: If you’re close to tears, take a deep breath and close those eyes. Let a smile form on your lips. You’d still look fabulous even if you’re already torn apart in the inside.

It didn’t take Fuji much time to get to Kikumaru’s place, nor did it take him too long to figure that his best friend needed a hug. Maybe just one, probably more than a dozen. All he was sure of was that Kikumaru needed him to be there.

“But Fuji, it’s already 5 a.m. I don’t exactly have the energy to-”

“Let’s skip classes for today. Want to go to the amusement park?”

Beauty Tip from Fuji Syusuke Number Four: If you’re close to tears once more and can’t hide that fact that tears are slowly cascading down your cheeks, it’s fine to open your eyes. You’d be sparkling unlike any other star.

Fuji fished his phone from his pocket and pushed a couple buttons.

“Oishi?”

He walked home alone that day, and he really didn’t mind. He usually was alone when he walked home, and this day wasn’t different. Before he left, he resisted the urge to place a soft kiss on Kikumaru’s forehead. Oishi was there; he couldn’t afford his fukubuchou to see that. Without another word, he left, and there he was, miles and miles away from the route to his place. That, too, wasn’t different.

But when he closed his eyes once more, he felt a couple of teardrops on his cheek that were slowly making their way to the barren ground.

And the rain poured.
