Hi Kate. I saw your post in the add me community. You seem to be a cool person and I'd like to get to know you better, if you don't mind. My name is Sarah and I'm 21. I'm also working to become independent as well and attending college. Do you mind if I add you?
Saw your add_me post, and so I've added you. I was interested that you're interested to know about philosophy because I got my degree in philosophy and I write a good number of posts in my journal on the different philosophical concepts that roll around my head. There's some public posts if you want to preview.
As for philosophical books go some of them are a real chore to read, while other ones aren't as bad. The Plato dialogs are usually okay. I recommend The Symposium and The Republic. The Symposium is about the nature of love, while the Republic is about trying to define what is just.
If you're going into neurosurgery though you absolutely should read "Hair Brain, Tortoise Mind" by Guy Claxton. It's about the role the subconscious has in thinking and it's quite well written.
I have read your post at _science_ community. Also I know nothing about neuroscience or quantum mechanics it have interested me. It would be interesting to speak with a person who is interested in such subjects and who is on such quest
